Glasses Lifespan and Lens Care

2025-06-11

People in China usually change their glasses about every 19 months. Why? Main reasons: eyesight changes, wanting better lenses, lenses getting scratched or damaged, or breaking them.

What happens if you wear glasses too long?

  1. Lenses turn yellow:Most lenses are plastic. Over time, heat, humidity, and normal use make them yellow. This messes up how colors look and can even throw off your color sense.
  2. Scratches everywhere:Even tough-coated lenses get scratched from daily wear—especially if you wipe them with a dirty cloth that has tiny rough bits. Scratches blur your vision and make your eyes tired.
  3. Lenses get out of position:Frames can bend if you don't put them on/take them off carefully or store them poorly. This moves the "sweet spot" of the lens, making your eyes work harder. You might feel eye strain, headaches, or even see your eyesight get worse. Basically, they just feel uncomfortable.

When should you actually get new glasses?

  • Kids & Teens (eyes changing fast):Their eyes change fast. Get your eyes checked every 3 months. Replace glasses every 6 months to a year. Since they grow, frames might get too small too!.
  • Adults (stable eyesight):You can usually keep the same lenses for 5 to 2 years. Get your eyes checked every 6-12 months. If your eyes feel tired or strained, see your eye doctor – you might need special lenses.
  • Older Adults (especially with progressives):Get your eyes checked at least once a year. Progressive lenses are fussy. They need to sit just right on your face. If they get damaged or bent, or if you have trouble seeing clearly or feel uncomfortable, get them checked.

How to make your glasses last longer?

  • Clean them right:Use the special cloth and spray cleaner. Don't use your shirt or a rough towel!
  • Keep away from chemicals:Things like cosmetics and oils can damage the lens coatings. Clean them off quickly.
  • Handle with care:Put them on and take them off with both hands. Store them in their case when you're not wearing them. This keeps the frames straight and protects the lenses.

The main takeaway: Even if your glasses look okay, get your eyes checked regularly based on your age. Your eyesight or needs might have changed. And taking good care of your glasses helps them last!
